This this section of 49 kilometres of the A-66 between Benavente and Zamora will mark completion of the connection between Gijon and Seville known as the Silver Route. The new highway is divided into three stages: the A-6 section between Castrogonzalo and Santovenia; a second section between Santovenia and Fontanillas de Castro and the third between Fontanillas de Castro and Zamora. To minimise the environmental impact, the highway runs alongside the N-630.
The Silver Route Highway provides a saving of 15 minutes on the route between Benavente and Zamora. Payment is by an availability payment scheme, which means that the user does not pay tolls. The concession period is 30 years.
After signature of the contract the detailed engineering of all three sections was completed in a record time of four months. Construction began in July 2013 and finished in May 2015, two months ahead of time.
